ST. John Bosco Parish Maram

History of Church

The first conversion to Christianity began between November 12-17, 1955 when Mr. Simon from Tangkhul tribe and a photographer from Tadubi took Oja Pungdingoulung, Psiitaruba and Psiingouni from Karangnamai Clan and Oja Taruba from Magaimai Clan to Tonema Village of Ukhrul District and showed them the way to Christianity and converted them.

In 1956 February, Oja John from Lamboi (Ramva Village) Ukhrul came to Maramai Namdi as a Baptist missionary and converted 8 families to Christianity and served as a pastor for few months but the converted families could not pay the pastors salary as well as support the Church. It was at this point that Oja John seeing the inability of the Christian community approached Rev. Fr Bianchi who started assisting the Church and converted the families to the Catholic faith.

Today the Catholic Church has grown into a big tree and has the maximum members in Maramai Namdi. The Church is also proud to have the Maram first and second Priest Rev. Fr. James sdb and Rev. Fr. Rang sdb from St. Peter’s Church, Maramai Namdi. The first Priestly ordination of Rev. Fr. T.P. James sdb took place at the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Maram Area Catholic Association in 2006 at Maramai Namdi. The Church also has four Nuns Sr. Sanga Genevive, Sr. Rana Rosline, Sr.Dila Veronica and Sr. Kana Florence.
